In fields that produce carefully authored compositions, such as architecture, the chance arrangements of material grain, patinas, or other traces of matter’s resistance to orderly control are sometimes allowed an expression in the final work. In these instances they are viewed as desirable features, or evidence of a work’s architectonic authenticity. Moreover, the effects of weathering, natural forces, or structural deformation over time are often seen as informal enhancements to the rigidity of precise compositions. The outcome of a visual studies seminar by architect Andrew Zago, this volume gathers photographic evidence of myriad instances of material happenstance, also called accidents.
