Alors que le film DIRECT ACTION se veut contemplatif et silencieux, le livre DIRECT ACTION se propose d’en faire le contrechamp. Après une projection du film à la ZAD de Notre-Dame-des-Landes au mois de décembre 2023 Guillaume Cailleau et Ben Russell ont souhaité prolonger l’expérience en collectant les récits des protagonistes du film, à l’issue de projections, lors d’entretiens informels ou par correspondance.

L’absence quasi-totale de discours politique dans le film permet l’existence parallèle d’un livre centré sur le langage, la réception et l’interprétation. Ces interventions se composent d’anecdotes personnelles, d’histoires politiques et de détails intimes suscités par les images, révélant un riche réseau de liens entre un lieu, une personne, un collectif et une cause.
Cette approche a quelque chose en commun avec le travail d’anthropologues visuels tels que Robert Gardner ou Jean Rouch dans les années 1970-80, qui accompagnaient souvent leurs œuvres audiovisuelles de publications servant à décrire, définir et interpréter leurs images. Il n’était cependant pas courant pour ces anthropologues de se tourner vers leurs sujets pour leur demander un contexte et une interprétation. Dans cette publication, il s’agit de s’appuyer principalement sur les impressions des ZADistes afin d’étendre le travail vers les territoires de l’histoire, de la mémoire, du débat et de la stratégie militante.

Un texte critique d’Erika Balsom ainsi qu’une interview croisée avec Antoine Thirion, programmateur et journaliste, accompagnent les paroles d’Anaïs, Arthur, Baptiste, Benj, Blue, Cécile, -h-, Colette, Corentin, Étienne, Isa, Jasmin, Jay, Ji, Lara, Lino, Marcel, Mathilde, Bastien, René, Servane, Sylvie, Thibault, Tanne, Tibo et Yahia.

While the film DIRECT ACTION is intended to be contemplative and silent, the book DIRECT ACTION is intended to be a counterpoint. After a screening of the film at the Notre-Dame-des-Landes ZAD in December 2023, Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell decided to extend the experience by collecting the stories of the film’s protagonists, after screenings, in informal interviews or by correspondence.
The almost total absence of spoken political discourse in the film allows for the parallel existence of a book focused on language, reception and interpretation. These interventions consist of personal anecdotes, political histories and intimate details prompted by the images, revealing a rich network of links between a place, a person, a collective and a cause.
This approach has something in common with the work of visual anthropologists such as Robert Gardner and Jean Rouch in the 1970s and 80s, who often accompanied their audiovisual works with publications describing, defining and interpreting their images. It was not common, however, for these anthropologists to turn to their subjects for context and interpretation. In this publication, the aim is to draw primarily on the ZADists’ impressions to extend the silence of the film into thick pages of language, to extend the work into the territories of history, memory, debate and militant strategy.

A critical text by Erika Balsom and a cross-interview with programmer and journalist Antoine Thirion accompany the words of Anaïs, Arthur, Baptiste, Benj, Cécile, -h-, Colette, Corentin, Étienne, Isa, Jasmin, Jay, Juli, Lara, Lino, Marcel, Mathilde, Michel, René, Servane, Sylvie, Thibault, Tanne, Tibo and Yahia.
